Cage-free poultry farming has gained popularity recently in America, Europe, and other continents. Chickens are not caged during the breeding process in cage-free chicken farming. Contrary to caged chicken farming, cage-free poultry is raised in a space with bedding where the birds can engage in a variety of behaviors like feeding, drinking, laying eggs, and mating.
Cage free chicken farming refers to raising chickens without using cages. This system typically follows the “two highs and one low” layout: the raised platforms are positioned on both sides of the house, while the center floor area is lower. The central ground is covered with bedding material, and the platforms on each side are elevated about 35 cm above the floor. Chickens access feed and water only on the platforms, allowing most manure to fall beneath them. However, chickens may still come into contact with manure on the litter, so strict litter management is essential to prevent disease outbreaks. The recommended stocking density is generally around 4.8 birds/m². This remains one of the most widely adopted cage-free housing systems.
Daily tasks for workers in a cage-free poultry house include feeding, egg collection, routine house repairs, and disinfection. The system does not require highly technical skills, and new staff can begin work with minimal training, making overall management relatively simple.

In most cases, cage-free poultry houses are constructed with an eave height between 2.5 m and 3.5 m. Steel-structure poultry houses are commonly designed with a width of 8–15 m, while the length is ideally kept under 140 m for optimal ventilation and management efficiency.

Different types of cage free chicken farming
Compared with poultry battery cages, cage free chicken house gives chickens more free space. generally speaking, there are mainly three types of cage free chicken houses for farmers to choose from. The most advanced one is cage free chicken house with a slatted floor, the second one is a deep litter house, and the last one is just laying a blanket or something else on the floor. Most farmers would like to choose the slatted floor chicken house or the deep littered house, which is clean and high efficiency, and can raise poultry much easier.
